This is a working overview of Gastric juice protein, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.

The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.
Identity and purity are established using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the peptide from related impurities and yields a percentage purity. Mass spectrometry, typically with electrospray ionization, confirms the molecular mass against the expected value. Amino acid analysis or peptide mapping provides additional sequence confirmation. These methods are complementary, since chromatography measures how much material is present while mass spectrometry verifies what that material is. A certificate of analysis normally reports both.
Analytical results depend on the column, gradient, and detector wavelength chosen by the laboratory, so purity values from different sources are not always directly comparable. Water content, counterion form, and residual trifluoroacetate affect both mass and purity calculations. Microbiological and endotoxin testing are separate from chemical purity and are not covered by a standard chromatographic run. Buyers evaluating a material typically request the full method description rather than a single purity figure.
Lyophilized peptide powder is generally stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower and kept away from light and moisture. Under these conditions degradation is slow, and sealed vials remain stable for extended periods. Once dissolved, the material is less stable, particularly in aqueous buffers near neutral pH, where hydrolysis and oxidation proceed faster. Solutions are usually kept cold and used within days to weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they encourage aggregation.

Direct human evidence is scarce. One trial in ulcerative colitis delivered the compound by enema and produced limited publicly reported results without a clear benefit. The compound is not an approved medicine in most jurisdictions. In many markets it is sold as a research chemical; in others it falls under prescription or controlled categories. Regulators have not confirmed any claimed medical use, and product labels rarely undergo premarket review.
Most published reports describe experiments in rodents rather than in people. These studies examine outcomes in tendons, ligaments, bone, stomach lining, and intestinal tissue. In rat and mouse models, a frequently reported effect is faster healing or reduced damage. Sample sizes are usually small, and a substantial share of the work originates from a small number of research groups. Independent replication is limited, so how far the findings extend to humans remains an open question.
Some properties, such as the peptide's sequence and molecular mass, are firmly established. Other claims, particularly about mechanism and clinical benefit, remain open questions. Proposed mechanisms include effects on nitric oxide signaling and on cell migration, but these are hypotheses supported by limited evidence. Reviewers often note that the field lacks large controlled human trials. Positive animal findings are best treated as signals for further study rather than as settled conclusions.
Most published studies examine BPC-157 in animal models rather than in humans. Common subjects include rats and mice, and researchers often use models of tissue injury, surgery, or induced inflammation. Reported endpoints include healing rates, blood vessel formation, and markers of tissue repair. These designs provide controlled comparisons, but findings in animals do not automatically transfer to people. Human clinical data remain limited and are frequently described as preliminary.
Long-term storage of the dry powder is typically described at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, while shorter holding periods may use ordinary refrigeration. Repeated warming and cooling cycles are discouraged because they stress the material and can promote aggregation or loss. Light exposure and residual moisture are both treated as avoidable sources of degradation, and working aliquots are often prepared to limit how many times a container is opened. Sealed vials with a desiccant are the usual container.
Quality assessment rests on two separate questions: whether the chain is the intended one, and how much of the sample is that chain. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the standard purity measurement, while mass spectrometry confirms identity through the observed molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and sequence verification provide further checks. A reported purity percentage describes the proportion of the sample represented by the main peak, not the amount of peptide by mass, since counter-ions and water make up part of any lyophilized lot.
In its usual supplied form, the peptide is a white to off-white lyophilized powder that dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers. Powder keeps far longer than solution, so material is normally shipped and stored dry, then dissolved only when needed. Once in solution, the chain is subject to hydrolysis and the liquid supports microbial growth, and practical guidance generally treats the dissolved form as short-lived. Containers should stay sealed and desiccated, because the powder takes up moisture from air.
== Use and effects == In his book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved), Alexander Shulgin lists TMA's dose as 100 to 250 mg orally and its duration as 6 to 8 hours. For comparison, mescaline is typically used at doses of 200 to 500 mg orally and is said to have a duration of 10 to 12 hours or longer. TMA's positional isomer 2,4,5-trimethoxyamphetamine (2,4,5-TMA or TMA-2) is much more potent than TMA, with a dose of 20 to 40 mg orally and a duration of 8 to 12 hours. The effects of TMA have been reported to include closed-eye imagery, introspection, music enhancement, emotional volatility, annoyance and irritability, feeling violent, lightheadedness, giddiness, and nausea, among others. It is said to lack mescaline's color changes and to have a "thread of negativity" at higher doses and a possible "antisocial nature" that has limited interest in the drug.
Blackhill was built on a country golf course (see Glasgow Golf Club), near the Monkland Canal with its Blackhill Locks. Many early residents report summers of country rambles, often along the Molendinar Burn – now the only place this historic burn is still visible on the surface – to the loch at Hogganfield. There was (and is) a strong sense of neighbourliness, partly encouraged by the enclosed nature of the site, due to industry, railways and main roads cutting it off from other districts. It was, however, built close to a gasworks (Provan Gas Works) and a distillery, which did not add to the health of the area and, perhaps for this reason, it gained a reputation for being "difficult to let".
Amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) are abnormal differences seen in magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in patients with Alzheimer's disease. ARIA is associated with anti-amyloid drugs, particularly human monoclonal antibodies such as aducanumab. There are two types of ARIA: ARIA-E and ARIA-H. The phenomenon was first seen in trials of bapineuzumab. ARIA-E refers to cerebral edema, involving the breakdown of the tight endothelial junctions of the blood-brain barrier and subsequent accumulation of fluid. In a double-blind trial of the humanised monoclonal antibody solanezumab (n = 2042), sixteen patients (11 taking the drug, 5 taking a placebo), or 0.78% developed ARIA-E. A further 7 patients developed ARIA-E during an open-label extension of the trial. The effect of ARIA-E depends on the severity and location of the edema. Symptoms may include headache, changes in mental state, confusion, vomiting, nausea, tremor and gait disturbances.
Propranolol is occasionally used to treat performance anxiety, although evidence to support its use in any anxiety disorders is poor. Its efficacy in managing panic disorder appears similar to benzodiazepines, while carrying lower risks for addiction or abuse. Although beta blockers such as propranolol have been suggested to be beneficial in managing physical symptoms of anxiety, its efficacy in treating generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder remain unestablished. It is thought that beta blockers do not directly treat psychological symptoms of anxiety, but can help control physical symptoms such as palpitations and tremors. This may interfere with a positive feedback loop to indirectly reduce psychological anxiety. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found widespread prescription of beta blockers, namely propranolol, for treatment of anxiety disorders, but found no evidence of a beneficial effect relative to placebo or benzodiazepines in people with social phobia or panic disorder. However, the quality of evidence, including both numbers of studies and patients as well as quality and risk of bias of those studies, was limited. Findings were similar in a previous 2016 systematic review and meta-analysis. Other beta blockers that have been used to treat anxiety disorders besides propranolol include atenolol, betaxolol, nadolol, oxprenolol, and pindolol. Some experimentation has been conducted in other psychiatric areas:

== Similar conditions == A food craving is an intense desire to consume a specific food, as opposed to general hunger. Similarly, thirst is the craving for water. A concept of food noise or food chatter has gotten more attention in the early 2020s since the advent of antiobesity indications for a class of medications called GLP-1 agonists (e.g., semaglutide). Food noise is a mental preoccupation with food in general (as opposed to one specific food) that is largely independent from physiological hunger but nonetheless is distracting for many people; it includes recurring thoughts about what one has or hasn't eaten in recent hours, what one would like to eat right now or "shouldn't" eat right now, and what one might be eating (or "should" avoid eating) in upcoming hours. Among people for whom these medications are effective in helping with weight loss, most express that the level of food noise in their mind is noticeably reduced. Even without these medications, some people may be able to reduce food noise by modifying their dietary patterns and exercise; this is more effective for some people than others. An expert panel convened in 2024 defined food noise as "Persistent thoughts about food that are perceived by the individual as being unwanted and/or dysphoric and may cause harm to the individual, including social, mental, or physical problems." The group also developed and conducted a rigorous, multi-step evaluation of an instrument to measure food noise (Ro-Allison-Indiana-Dhurandhar Food Noise Instrument, or RAID-FN).
== Mobile phase == The mobile phase, or the liquid phase that runs across the column during separation, for HILIC is typically composed of a high amount of water-miscible, polar organic solvent and a low amount of water. Typically, acetonitrile ("MeCN", also designated as "ACN") is used for the organic solvent, though other aprotic water-miscible solvents, such as alcohols at higher concentration, tetrahydrofuran, or dioxane, can also be used. As with other methods of chromatography, the mobile phase can be delivered isocratically or with a gradient starting at high-organic progressing towards increasing aqueous content. If using a mobile phase gradient, the mobile phase will progressively increases in polar-aqueous content, causing increasingly polar analytes to be eluted. All ions partition into the stationary phase to some degree, so an occasional "wash" with water is required to ensure a reproducible stationary phase.
In the second part of the reaction process, the nitrile is hydrolyzed. First, the nitrile nitrogen of the aminonitrile is protonated, and the nitrile carbon is attacked by a water molecule. A 1,2-diamino-diol is then formed after proton exchange and a nucleophilic attack of water to the former nitrile carbon. Ammonia is subsequently eliminated after the protonation of the amino group, and finally the deprotonation of a hydroxyl group produces an amino acid.

Thymosins are small proteins present in many animal tissues. They are named thymosins because they were originally isolated from the thymus, but most are now known to be present in many other tissues. Thymosins have diverse biological activities, and two in particular, thymosins α1 and β4, have potentially important uses in medicine, some of which have already progressed from the laboratory to the clinic. In relation to diseases, thymosins have been categorized as biological response modifiers. Thymosins are important for proper T-cell development and differentiation.

== Enzyme activity == Activated by calcium, the enzyme digests proteins preferentially after hydrophobic amino acids (aliphatic, aromatic and other hydrophobic amino acids). Although calcium ions do not affect the enzyme activity, they do contribute to its stability. Proteins will be completely digested if the incubation time is long and the protease concentration high enough. Upon removal of the calcium ions, the stability of the enzyme is reduced, but the proteolytic activity remains. Proteinase K has two binding sites for Ca2+, which are located close to the active center, but are not directly involved in the catalytic mechanism. The residual activity is sufficient to digest proteins, which usually contaminate nucleic acid preparations. Therefore, the digestion with Proteinase K for the purification of nucleic acids is usually performed in the presence of EDTA (inhibition of metal-ion dependent enzymes such as nucleases). Proteinase K is also stable over a wide pH range (4–12), with a pH optimum of pH 8.0. An elevation of the reaction temperature from 37 °C to 50–60 °C may increase the activity several times, like the addition of 0.5–1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or Guanidinium chloride (3 M), Guanidinium thiocyanate (1 M) and urea (4 M) . The above-mentioned conditions enhance proteinase K activity by making its substrate cleavage sites more accessible. Temperatures above 65 °C, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or the serine protease-inhibitors AEBSF, PMSF or DFP inhibit the activity.

"It seems to me", Mellanby wrote to Florey, "that the line of work you are suggesting will be interesting and may prove to be of practical importance." Florey felt that far more would be required. On 1 November 1939, Henry M. "Dusty" Miller Jr from the Natural Sciences Division of the Rockefeller Foundation paid Florey a visit. Miller encouraged Florey to apply for funding from the foundation and supported his application. "The work proposed", Florey wrote in the application letter, "in addition to its theoretical importance, may have practical value for therapeutic purposes." His application was approved, with the foundation allocating US$5,000 (£1,250) per annum for five years. The Oxford team's first task was to obtain a sample of penicillin mould. This turned out to be easy. Georges Dreyer, Florey's predecessor, had obtained a sample of the mould in 1930 for his work on bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria. Dreyer had lost interest in penicillin when he discovered that it was not a bacteriophage, but he had continued to cultivate it. Dreyer had died in 1934, but Campbell-Renton had continued to culture the mould and was able to supply it to the Oxford team. The next task was to grow sufficient mould to extract enough penicillin for laboratory experiments. The mould was cultured on a surface of liquid Czapek-Dox medium. Over the course of a few days it formed a yellow gelatinous skin covered in green spores. Beneath this, the liquid became yellow and contained penicillin. The team determined that the maximum yield was achieved in ten to twenty days.
On 26 September 1983, during the Cold War, the Soviet nuclear early warning system Oko reported the launch of one intercontinental ballistic missile with four more missiles behind it, from the United States. These missile attack warnings were suspected to be false alarms by Stanislav Petrov (1939–2017), an engineer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces on duty at the command center of the early-warning system. He decided to wait for corroborating evidence—of which none arrived—rather than immediately relaying the warning up the chain of command. This decision is seen as having prevented a retaliatory nuclear strike against the United States and its NATO allies, which would likely have resulted in a full-scale nuclear war. Investigation of the satellite warning system later determined that the system had indeed malfunctioned.
== Function == This gene is a member of the glycoprotein hormone beta chain family and encodes the beta subunit of luteinizing hormone (LH). Glycoprotein hormones are heterodimers consisting of a common alpha subunit and a unique beta subunit (this protein) which confers biological specificity. LH is expressed in the pituitary gland and promotes spermatogenesis and ovulation by stimulating the testes and ovaries to synthesize steroids.

It is a synthetic peptide. Its design was inspired by a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, but the fifteen-amino-acid molecule itself is made in a laboratory and is not a normal component of food or of human tissue in appreciable amounts.
The number is an internal laboratory designation from the research group that first described the fragment. It does not encode a molecular weight, a receptor target, or a measured biological effect, and it carries no meaning outside the naming history of the compound.
It contains fifteen amino acid residues and has a calculated mass of roughly 1419.5 daltons. That places it in the short-peptide range, well below the size of small proteins, which affects how it is synthesized, purified, and analyzed.
Bacteriostatic water or sterile saline is commonly used to dissolve the powder. The choice of solvent affects stability and preservation. Aqueous solutions are kept refrigerated and are not intended for long-term storage.
